An MSE retaining wall comprises a compound created by alternating layers of reinforced soil elements and compacted backfill that is joined to a thin wall façade, constructed from the likes of pre-cast concrete, shotcrete (sprayed concrete) or welded and woven wire mesh panels.
The purpose of this façade is predominantly to retain the soil between the reinforced layers. The soil material is placed directly on the natural surface of the ground on the stabilised zone, without any reinforcement. This zone is commonly known as retained backfill.
The friction created between the reinforced soil and compacted backfill causes a flexible, stable gravity structure that is ideal for carrying continuous and dynamic heavy loads (such as lateral pressure from water or the earth, seismic loads or human activity) for applications such as berms (area next to a road or a river embankment), seawalls and bridge abutments.
Naturally, a factor that significantly contributes to the overall strength and resilience of an MSE retaining wall, is the material that is used to reinforce the MSE or soil, which could be horizontal layers of steel or geosynthetics – a civil engineering field which EIS has more than two decades of first-hand experience of.
Pros and Cons
Some of the pros of MSE retaining walls are that they may tolerate larger total and differential settlements when compared to concrete retaining walls and they could be simpler and quicker to construct - as they do not require support structures such as scaffolding. A con is that the wall must obtain a certain minimum reinforced soil width for adequate stability, which makes it a total no-go for areas where space is an issue.
